Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about this tool
PDF/A is an ISO-standardised subset of PDF designed for long-term archiving. It bans features that depend on external software (JavaScript, encryption, external fonts) and requires everything the document needs to render correctly to be embedded within the file itself. This guarantees the file will look identical in 50 years.
PDF/A-1b is the safest choice for maximum compatibility with older systems. PDF/A-2b is recommended for modern workflows — it supports transparency and produces smaller files. PDF/A-3b is required for e-invoicing standards like ZUGFeRD or Factur-X that embed XML data inside a PDF.
The visual appearance is preserved as closely as possible. The main change you may notice is that transparency effects are flattened in PDF/A-1b. Fonts, images, and layout remain identical.
Digital signatures may be invalidated during conversion because PDF/A modifies the file structure. If you need both a valid digital signature and PDF/A compliance, sign the document after converting to PDF/A.
No — PDF/A does not allow encryption of any kind. You must remove the password first (use our Unlock PDF tool), then convert to PDF/A.
